Tim Rushlow fronted one of the most successful
country bands of the 1990s, Little Texas. He scored a solo
hit in 2001 with "She Misses Him" until his label
fell victim to a corporate mega-merger. He regrouped with
the band that takes his name: Rushlow. Other members include
Tim’s cousin Doni Harris, who adds acoustic guitar
and soaring harmonies to the mix; lead guitarist Kurt Allison;
keyboardist/vocalist Billy Welch; bass guitar/vocalist Tully
Kennedy; and drummer Rich Redmond.
The
beginnings of the band Rushlow had begun during his solo
career when Harris and Welch had become part of Tim Rushlow's
band. Tim saw Allison, Kennedy, and Redmond playing at a
Nashville club, backing another singer. "I remember
thinking, 'These guys are smoking,' long before I knew what
direction my career would take. Six months later, when it
started coming together, I started asking around about them
and found them again."
Tim
and the new band took to the road, playing Thursday through
Saturday in small to medium-sized cities, making "just
enough money to get there and get back and have some Ramen
soup and spaghetti on the table." He formulated a plan
that coupled his tireless work ethic with the band's downtime,
offering a live "unplugged" on-air appearance
to local radio stations during the day, complete with a
"win dinner with Rushlow" contest.
"It
didn't cost anybody any money," he says, "and
radio got so excited about us giving them our time that
they would pump up the show and we would play to a packed
house." Word would get back to the Nashville labels
of how persistent Tim was with radio a week or two later.
As the band toured, they were honing the songs Tim had been
choosing, and many of them found their way to Right Now,
their 2003 debut album on Lyric Street Records.
